On Tuesday I took Danny to see one of his favorite musicals, Seussical the Musical. I took him because he likes it and I wanted to do something nice for him, and not because I thought I would particularly enjoy it. After the opening number I was particularly skeptical. But from this unexpectedly delightful musical I have found a new theme song for my life. It's called Tell Yourself How Lucky You Are. (You can listen to it in my Groovehsark playlist to the right)
When your life's going wrong When the fates are unkind When you're limping along And get kicked from behind Tell yourself how lucky you are...
It's super catchy. After the musical I was telling Danny how stressed I am about leaving for Europe for eight weeks and about defending my thesis prospectus later today (Thursday). Then we said goodbye and I started the somewhat long and expensive drive back to Heber where my parents live. On the drive back, I thought of my new theme song and was suddenly able to see my life differently.
When you're getting ready to leave on the vacation of a lifetime, Tell yourself how lucky you are...
And no, I don't want to say goodbye to Danny, but, Tell yourself how lucky you are... to finally be his girlfriend
And he says nothing will change while you're gone and has made lots of plans for when you get back, Tell yourself how lucky you are...
When you are making progress on your thesis and masters degree, studying what you love most, and you just won an award for a paper you wrote about it, Tell yourself how lucky you are...
When you have a car you love any money enough for gas, and your parents live close enough that you can stay with them when you have to move out of your apartment and are still close enough to visit people in Provo, Tell yourself how lucky you are...
When some of your favorite people move to different states (Patrick and Alisha) and you'll miss them a lot, Tell yourself how lucky you are... for having known them in the first place and that they loved pinochle too.
OK, so my version isn't quite as catchy or rhythmical as the original, but the idea is the same. Thanks, Dr. Seuss.
Lately I've come to understand that a blog doesn't necessarily have to be hilarious to be an exceptional blog. A blog that inspires and uplifts is also an exceptional blog. As much as I appreciate good humor, there are other worthy things to promote. But enough of this meta-blogging. I was recently introduced to a website called the Day Zero Project where you can make a list of 101 goals to complete in 1001 days. As I was making my list and using their Idea Finder, I was happy to see that there were several things suggested that used to be on my To Do list but are now on my Done list. But it was also rewarding in a way just to make a new list, to redefine some of the things I want from life. I tried to include some practical goals, some dreams, some enlightening goals, and some whimsical goals which may prove to be the most difficult for me. Here is the list I ended up with.
I'm not too set on the 1001 days bit, but several of these goals are in sight and I think I'll start making headway really soon. I'm curious about what you would add to your list, so leave me a comment or make a list of your own and let me know.
